About UsThe Wishing Well ProjectOur Mission Statement
Americans use water constantly. I waste water when I leave it running as I brush my teeth, or as I do my dishes. Indeed, the amount of water I waste everyday ads up to more water than many Africans get for all of their drinking, washing, cooking, cleaning, etc. True, the water epidemic doesnt affect most wealthy Africans, but we at Wishing Well believe that even the poorest or most remote people in the world deserve the basic necessity of clean water. Sadly, the greatest struggle of the impoverished of Africa is simply getting enough clean water. The water that is available is usually found in ponds and puddles infested with bacteria and parasites. Diarrhea, which is just one of countless waterborne diseases, claims the lives of 1.6 million per year, 90% of whom are children (World Health Organization). Women and children spend as much as six hours of their day walking to get this water, which can up to spending over 90 days in one year. These kind of man-hours wasted on retrieving water devastates the social and economical development in a country.
